Duels

Challenge another pilot to a lawful five-minute fight with no flags and no conduct loss, anywhere in the Reach.

A duel is a fight both pilots agreed to. For five minutes, the two of you can shoot each other with no flags, no conduct loss and no Warden response, even at a station in Core space. It's a real fight: the loser loses the ship. It's just a lawful one.

Steps

  1. Select the other pilot's ship. Both of you must be in the same system.
  2. Choose Challenge to a duel in the selected item panel, the radial menu or the Scope's row menu. Show mePlay to try this
  3. They get a prompt with your name and conduct, and have 30 seconds to accept.
  4. Once accepted, lock them and fight.

The rules

  • Length: 5 minutes from the moment it's accepted.
  • Lawful between you two: neither of you gets a flag or loses conduct for attacking the other. Your weapons safety allows it even on Locked.
  • Everyone else plays by the normal rules. A third pilot who joins in is judged as usual. If they attack either duellist without a right to, that's an unprovoked attack.
  • One at a time: you can't challenge someone already in a duel, or start one while you're in one.

How a duel ends

  • Either ship is destroyed. The winner and loser both get a result.
  • Either pilot docks, jumps through a gate or leaves.
  • The 5 minutes run out.

A challenge that isn't answered within 30 seconds expires. A declined challenge just tells you so.

On screen

While you're duelling, your opponent carries a Duel tag in the Scope and on their bracket, so you can tell them apart from anyone else on grid. Show mePlay to try this

Tip
Duelling is the safe way to try a new fit against a friend. Pick a quiet spot, agree on rules, and remember that the loser's ship is really gone. Fly something you can replace.

Duels and your syndicate

Members of the same syndicate may already fight each other freely, at any time, without a duel. A duel is how you fight a pilot from outside your syndicate, or with no syndicate at all, without anyone losing conduct.
